Medical Workers Upbear Hope of Life
—SYSU Second Hospital Nurse Diao Dongmei Delivering Speech at First Lecture on Quake-relief Heroic Deeds on Behalf of Aiding-Sichuan Medical Workers

On the morning of June 11, 7 model workers give speeches at the first lecture on heroic deeds in quake relief efforts in the Great Hall of the People. Moved by their stories, the audience burst into tears and applause.

Senior Chinese leaders attended the lecture. Before the lecture, Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, and Xi Jinping, China's vice-president and also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, met with the model workers.

As the one and only medical worker among the speakers, Diao Dongmei, who is a member of Guangdong Quake Relief Medical Team and a nurse at SYSU Second Hospital, delivered a speech titled Medical Workers Upbear Hope of Life. When recalling those touching scenes, Diao choked with sobs for several times during the speech. Muffled sobs can also be heard from the audience. Her 2-minute-long speech was broken at intervals by the audience’s thunderous applause.

Guangdong Quake Relief Medical Team not only incarnates Guangdong people’s loving hearts, but also is the only model unit chosen by the Ministry of Health to represent those 60,000 medical workers aiding the quake-hit Sichuan.
