At present, Sun Yat-sen University has 114 laboratories of all kinds managed at two levels, of which 7 are fundamental teaching laboratories in different disciplines (managed by the university), 6 are experiment teaching centers for different specialties consisting of 31 basic specialty experiment labs (managed by the schools), and 40 are research laboratories. There are 3 national key laboratories, 5 key research laboratories (open) designated by the Ministry of Education, 3 key research laboratories designated by the Ministry of Health, and 7 key laboratories (open) at the provincial level. All these form a complete system in experimenting, teaching, and researching. The laboratories are equipped with numerous advanced apparatus; the laboratories are elegantly decorated and spacious; they are all built and managed according to high standards and norms, thus providing fine environment, equipment and infra-structure for conducting teaching and learning and for academic research.

The laboratories in the university own a total of 34289 pieces (sets) of equipment valuing 328.92 million yuan, of which there are 322 pieces (sets) of precious apparatuses with a unit price of over 100,000 yuan, totaling 109.53 million yuan. The university offers 2616 items of experiments, and the total experiment teaching hours amount to 2815236 person/hour. The total area of experimental labs in use is 55422 square meters, and there are 416 technicians. At present, the average area for experiment use in fundamental teaching is more than 2 square meters per student, with one student as a group, and the rate of experiments offered is 100%.

The university emphasizes the role of experiment teaching in cultivating the students’ general quality and creative ability, standardizes the management and construction of laboratories and promotes reform in experiment teaching. By setting up fundamental teaching laboratories in different disciplines and forming experiment teaching centers, the university transforms, readjusts and recombines the old structure of experiment laboratories, thus enhancing the scientific nature of the construction of experiment laboratories, raising the rate of utilizing resources and providing the necessary conditions for quality education and training of creative talents.
