Chinese Classical Orchestra of Sun Yat-sen University

Chinese Classical Orchestra of Sun Yat-sen University was founded under the leadership of the university Youth League Committee in March 2003. Its members, coming from different schools and departments, have the same love for Chinese classical music in common. These zestful youngsters formed a high-quality orchestra, a SYSU cultural brand.

The orchestra employed famous musicians and performers as the artistic consultant and instructor, including Pu Dongsheng, the famous conductor and chairman of Chinese Folk Orchestral Music Association, Yu Qiwei, the visiting professor from Chinese Academy of Music and outstanding Gaohu perfomer, Li Zhuqi, the first-grade state composer from Guangdong Song-dance Theater, Li Fubin, the associate professor from Xinhai Conservatory of Music and chief conductor of Guangdong Chinese Classical Ochestra, Liu Zhan, the ex-deputy director of Guangdong Soldiers Song and Dance Ensemble and well-known expert in percussion music, Wang Yongji, the famous conductor and composer as well as music director of Shanghai Classical Orchestra, Yan Huichang, the famous conductor and composer as well as music director of Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Wu Guozhong, the famous flute performer, etc. Students have made great progress in its training class which began in March of this year.

The folk orchestra is divided into four parts by musical instruments: pipes ( flutes, xiao, suona horns and reed pipe instruments), stringed instruments( erhu fiddles, Gaohu fiddles and Zhonghu fiddles), plucking instruments (lute, Zheng, Ruan, Liuqin Chinese plucked stringed musical instrument ), and the percussion instruments(dulcimers, nakers). The management committee of folk orchestra was founded in April, consisting of six departments: the secretary department, the public relations department, the internet department, the logistic department, the publicity department and the organization department. With the support from all the orchestra members, each department functions very well and various activities and programs have been organized, such as the lecture on national pipe music by Wu Guozhong, a famous flute player, Guangdong Music Centenary Tour- lecture by Yu Qiwei (famous Gaohu fiddle player). These lectures have met warm welcome from students. Apart from that, varied fellowship and communicative programs have also been organized for students of different education background to exchange ideas and make friends with each other, which helps to turn the orchestra into a big harmonious family.

On September thirteen, the orchestra made classical music a trend in campus, refreshing people with cultural air. On this day, a special concert entitled ¡°Lingering Chinese Music¡± was held in the concert hall of Xiong Delong Activity Center at 19:30, attended by school leaders, orchestra consultants and famous musicians. The full occupation of the seats shows the popularity of classical music on campus and the universal positive feedback demonstrates the achievement of the orchestra within these months. A large number of teachers and students told us that the orchestra¡¯s excellent performance ignited their interest in folk music. Recently, an increasing number of faculty and students have signed up for folk music class offered by this orchestra.

The folk orchestra has two kinds of management model: orchestra model (training class) and membership model. Faculty and students who are philharmonic in folk music can enroll the training classes. After a period of learning and practicing, the student who passes the examination can become qualified for the orchestra membership and participate in the orchestra¡¯s management as well as various performances inside or outside campus. Both members and students in training class should abide by the regulations of the orchestra, enjoying corresponding rights while performing due obligations.

The orchestra takes enhancing humanism atmosphere in school as one of its goal and task. In the near future, the orchestra will hold special music salons on regular terms and invite famous scholars to have lecture to make our campus life more colorful.
