Min Huifen, the renowned Erhu player, came to give a performance at
Sun Yat-sen University in the evening of March 21, bringing elegant
music to the campus again in celebration of the university¡¯s 80th
anniversary. Her skillful and talented performance won enthusiastic
applauses from the audience.
At the concert, Ms Min Huifen played ¡°Honghu Lake Capriccio¡±,
¡°Singing in illness¡±, ¡°Double Springs Reflecting the Moon¡±, ¡°Separation
in Honeymoon¡± and other well-known tunes for the faculty and students.
Her Erhu music was like the natural sounds of crying and murmuring that
conveyed the sadness and happiness in the human world to the fullest.
Before and after playing each tune, Ms Min would introduce to the
audience the theme and background of each piece of music, or illumine
the audience in appreciating the music. Her explanation was so concise
and pertinent that the audience benefited a lot from it. Nearly 2000
faculty members and students were present at the scene, listening
attentively and applauding warmly for the wonderful performance.
Ms Min Huifen was born in Yixing, Jiangsu Province. She began to
learn to play Erhu from her father at six, and graduated from the
Department of National Musical Instruments at Shanghai Conservatory. She
joined the Shanghai Institute of National Musical Instruments in 1978
and is now a first-grade national actress.
She won the champion at the fourth ¡°Spring of Shanghai¡± national
contest of Erhu in 1963, and received the honorary title of ¡°outstanding
artists in both moral and arts¡± by the Chinese Association of Arts in
1998. She had visited the US, France, Canada and over a dozen other
countries, as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, enjoying prestigious
fame everywhere she went. She is now member of the Chinese People¡¯s
Political Consultative Conference, member of the National Committee of
the Association of Arts, Deputy Chairman of the Chinese Association of
Music and of the Shanghai Association of Music. She was elected
representative to the 15th National Congress of the Party in 1997.
Before the concert began, Li Yanbao, Party Secretary of the
university, made a speech in which he praised Ms Min for her long-time,
arduous work in popularizing and promoting national music among ordinary
people of the country. He said it was a rare opportunity for her to
demonstrate her skills at Erhu in the university and wished that all
would enjoy the performance.
The concert was sponsored by the Publicity Department of the Party
Committee, the Academic Office, the Trade Union and the League Committee
of the University as one of the programs in celebration of the
university¡¯s 80th anniversary.
